To many people there is nothing quite so unsettling as the feeling that you are completely alone; there is no one to talk to, no one who understands you, no one you can rely on to help when times are bad. We are much more at ease in our minds when we know we have someone we can trust and depend on. Solomon comments on this in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Putting too much trust in people can sometimes lead to disappointment. It is not that people are necessarily bad, but they can be forgetful or weak when we need them most. Christians are blessed in knowing that we have someone who is completely trustworthy, someone that we know is listening to us and is concerned about us. Psalms 118:9 says, “It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes.” People often tend to be more likely to help someone that may be in a position to help them someday. God cares for us regardless of our situation. “But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God.” (Psalms 40:17). 1 John 5:14 tells us, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” Knowing that God hears us and will do what is best for us can help us through the rough places in life. “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16). “The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.” (Psalms 28:7). No matter what may come our way, we can place our confidence in God. “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:5-6).
